Barry Manilow was born Barry Alan Pincus on June 17, 1943, in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Edna Manilow and Harold Pincus. His father was born to a Jewish father and an Irish–American Catholic mother, while his own mother was of Russian Jewish descent. His grandparents immigrated to the United States from Brest–Litovsk, in today‘s Belarus, and changed the family name to “Manilow.”
He grew up in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn and attended Eastern District High School, graduating in 1961. Manilow‘s musical talents soon manifested themselves. At the age of seven, he began to study the piano and he attended the High School of Music & Art in Manhattan. His parents enrolled him in music lessons at an early age, and by thirteen he was taking trumpet lessons.
During his high school years, he worked as a piano–lounge singer in Brooklyn and played the drums in local rock bands, such as the Brooklyn Bridge. After graduating from high school, he enrolled in the City College of New York, where he briefly studied before going to work as a commercial jingle writer.
After several years writing jingles for advertisers such as State Farm Insurance and Coca–Cola, Manilow began his recording career in 1972, releasing his self–titled debut album. The album was a moderate success, selling around 100,000 copies. His next album, 1974‘s Barry Manilow II, brought him his first taste of success, reaching the top 30 on the Billboard 200 album chart and spawning the hit single “Mandy“. The album went gold and helped make Manilow a household name.
